Something incredible has recently happened in the music scene, as a rookie KPOP girl group, less than five months after debuting, has remained on Billboard‘s Hot 100 music chart in the United States for three consecutive weeks.
The group, FIFTY FIFTY, ranked 85th with its single “Cupid” in the latest version of the chart, updated Wednesday, rising nine places from 94th a week ago, after first entering two weeks ago at No. 100. The band became the fastest KPOP group to enter the chart after its debut.
“Actually, I still can’t believe it and I appreciate it very much,” said Saena, the band’s leader, during a press conference held on Thursday, April 13, in Seoul to celebrate their chart entry. “We had always thought about how to send our positive energy to the listeners since we were trainees, and I cautiously assume that that effort paid off.”
It took only 135 days for the quartet, which debuted in November, to enter the chart for the first time. This period is faster than any other KPOP group that has been listed in the top 100, such as Wonder Girls, TWICE, BLACKPINK, BTS and NewJeans.
.
The quartet said they had never expected this kind of thing to happen. Sio and bandmate Aran said they were so surprised, they covered their mouths with their hands when they heard the news of the band’s entry into the United States chart.
The song also climbed to No. 61 on the top 100 songs chart of the official UK Songs chart, introduced last Friday, up from No. 96, in its first week. Likewise, the title grabbed the seventh position on Spotify‘s Daily Top Song Global, becoming the highest-ranked KPOP group on the latest list.
Keena, the band’s rapper, said she realized the song’s popularity when she heard it on loudspeakers while passing by stores and record outlets on the streets of Seoul. She recalled that it was like a dream come true for her.
Behind her unexpected rise in the music markets, there is also the viral popularity of her song on TikTok. A speed up version of “Cupid” went viral on the platform, boosting plays and their good performance in the music charts.
The group expressed gratitude to those who made the video on TikTok, but said what underlies the popularity is their music. Member Saena said she believed that people love the group’s music because it is of high quality and contains the right energy they intend to convey.
