Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did not pay rent for the time they stayed at Frogmore Cottage

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back in the public eye for the first time since it was revealed that the couple was evicted from Frogmore Cottage due to the negative press they have brought to the royal family.

According to the Daily Mail, the former royal couple stopped paying rent even if they continued using the house located in Windsor. Harry and Meghan gave up on their royal titles and duties in 2020 and moved to the U.S. in order to live a calmer and better life.

After this, it was revealed that they needed to pay for the renovations that were done and the rent for the time they lived there according to the leasing agreement. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex allegedly paid £2.4 million for the extensive renovations. However, this payment exempted them from paying the £230.000 yearly rate for living there and saving up to £700.000.

This information did not sit well with the British people and even some political representatives showed their disagreement because the couple lived there rent-free for almost 3 years while some citizens are not even capable of paying for their basic expenses.

A palace spokesperson weighed in and explained that this was in line with the usual practices for the Sovereign Grant report and the lease agreement was scrutinized and signed off by the National Audit Office. As with any similar agreement between landlord and tenant, further details are considered a private matter.
