However, when they are next to their husbands they may have a higher rank: “Protocol dictates that when the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex are not accompanied by their husbands, the princess of royal blood, such as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, have a higher rank than them,” said the royal expert.

“However, when the duchesses are accompanied by their husbands, the roles are reversed and the duchesses outrank the princesses,” the expert concluded her argument, adding that it is a role play formally established by Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.
