Halle Bailey talks about how racist comments about The Little Mermaid affected her

Disney chose Halle Bailey, a girl of African descent for the character as part of its goal to provide representation for black girls; this decision sparked both positive and disparaging comments.

The film’s leading lady, Halle Bailey, had largely avoided the remarks, but she has now made the decision to speak out in advance of the movie’s release.

The Face, a publication that focuses on the world of fashion and the latest pop culture trends, has chosen Halle Bailey as its cover model for its most recent edition. She was questioned there regarding the critical remarks made about her. The new Ariel is not angry despite everything that has been said about her lately.

“As a black person, you just expect it and it’s not really a shock anymore. I know people are like, ‘It’s not about race.’ But now that I am (Ariel)… People don’t understand that when you’re black, there’s this whole other community. For us, it’s very important to see us.”

It appears that interest in The Little Mermaid is genuine despite the criticism from the internet community. Millions of people have watched the trailers on Disney’s official platforms, and industry insiders predict that it may end up being one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. The film’s content and the audience’s response will determine whether or not the racist criticisms were harmful or whether the general public’s interest was higher.

“When Chlöe (my sister) and I signed Parkwood, (Beyoncé) was always like, ‘Never read my comments. Never read the comments.’ Honestly, when the first teaser came out, I was at the C23 Expo and I was so happy. I didn’t see any of the negativity,” she added.

The Little Mermaid offers Bailey more than just an opportunity to succeed professionally. For all the African-American girls who don’t relate to the physical traits of their beloved characters, it also serves as a ray of hope. Ariel’s latest iteration will now offer them that chance. “I was crying all night for two days, just looking at them in disbelief. It makes me feel more grateful for where I am. I just want to keep healing through my art. Every project I’ve done has taught me something about myself, given me something to live for,” she finished.
