The former Spanish Queen Sofia of Greece, who presided over the Ibero-American Patronage Awards 2023, was recently serenaded by American singer Angela Aguilar, who is well-known for being a regional Mexican singer and descended from a successful singing family.
The interpreter posted several photos to her social media accounts from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where the ceremony was held. She was wearing a stunning black velvet dress with an embroidered snake standing on a cactus that was very reminiscent of the one on the country’s flag.
The singer herself bragged about her nice experience living next to the queen on social media: “incredible privilege, unimaginable to me. Indeed, music speaks to everyone. Many, many thanks!”
Users claim that Angela Aguilar violated procedure when she posed for the photo with Queen Sofia since the singer is accused of placing her hand on the monarch’s back, which is against convention.
Despite the significance of the image, her supporters did not stop berating her about her nationality after she won the World Cup for Argentina in Qatar and revealed that she is 25% Argentinean. This sparked criticism from her supporters, who claim that she only adopts the Mexican nationality when she wants to sell tickets for the Day of the Dead.
Angela Aguilar is now not widely appreciated in Mexico and is the focus of numerous social media jokes.
