Selena Gomez revealed that Disney forbade her to say “What the hell” when she was a child and had a signed contract with the entertainment giant for years. The 30-year-old actress, singer and producer indicated that it was all part of the agreement signed with Disney, to make sure she was a good role model. She represented the brand at the time.
“I wasn’t a wild child by any means, but I was at Disney, so I had to make sure I didn’t say ‘What the hell?’ in front of just anybody. Those are things that I was also putting on myself to be the best role model I could be,” Selena Gomez expressed in an interview with Vanity Fair for their Hollywood 2023 issue.
She went on to say that “now I think being the best role model is being honest, even with the ugly and complicated parts of yourself.” In 2021, Selena Gomez went so far as to say that “I signed my life away to Disney at a very young age” and that at the time, she didn’t know all that it meant. At the time, her statement made headlines in the entertainment media.

In conversation for this issue of Vanity Fair, the artist stated that “it’s really scary to see what happens when you’re given so much power and money at a young age. I think it’s extremely scary.” She was glad that her younger sister, nine years old, is not interested in show business.
The actress, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, opened up a few months ago in a documentary about her mental health. In the interview to the referred media, she indicated that this helped her and that she is not ashamed of having done it.
“I have things that are chemically unbalanced in my brain, and I need to understand what that is, take care of it and nurture it. I’m not ashamed. I never feel, even for five seconds, that I’m crazy. My thoughts tend to ruminate, but it’s up to me to be proud of who I am and take care of myself,” she said.
She used to dread the idea of being linked to Disney, but now confesses that “I feel free of all that.”
