In an interview with Weverse magazine, RM said he felt like he had “hit a wall” after BTS‘ performance at the 2022 Grammys. For him, it was at that moment that he realized it was time to change the goals of the K-Pop group.
BTS announced their hiatus last week so that all members can focus more intensely on their solo careers. According to the leader, the South Korean music industry was a big aggravating factor for the group making this kind of decision.
“The problem with K-POP and the whole idol system is that they don’t give you time to mature (…) I need to be aware of why I’m here, who the members are for me, the path we’re going to take as a group to conduct interviews and write lyrics. But right now, I’m not sure which group we are”, he explained during a live.

Now chatting with Weverse magazine, RM said that while he believed the Grammy performance had “shocked” people, it was time to shift the focus from change to the message the group wanted to convey.
“It’s something I felt when I looked at artists like Lady Gaga or HER, who dedicate their lives to music. We need a message to be safe and also assert our own image.
I think it’s time we go beyond surprising people and think again about what kind of messages we can send now“.
“You don’t get to the top and you stay there maintaining the status quo. I feel like I need to do something better, but I still can’t figure out what it is“.
