Mamamoo‘s Hwasa is the subject of controversy for “ignoring her elders” after a meeting with singer Uhm Junghwa surfaced behaviors that are accepted among some fans. On May 1st, the 52-year-old actress also posted on her Instagram account:
“While recording in Seoul, it was so nice to meet Hwasa after a long time because she is always busy and hard to contact her. She always jokes, ‘I’m in my senior year,’ so we had a laugh“
The clarification was due to the recent fourth episode of “Seoul Check-in” released on April 29th, where Lee Hyori, Uhm Jung-hwa, BoA and Hwasa spent a night together at Kim Wan-seon‘s house and had the following controversial conversation:
“If you go to Jeju, please call me too“, Hwasa told Junghwa.
“Really? You are always busy, you never answer my calls“, she replied.
“Hwasa is a girl who can afford to go to Paris with fancy handbags. She’s a world star, that’s why she ignores us.

Her major is Beyonce, not us“, added Lee Hyori

Seoul Check In
I'm happy to meet Hwasa after a long time ~
I think I said I couldn't get in touch with her because she was busy
But it was suppose to be 'I wanted to contact her'

Netizens shared their annoyance with the jokes and accused the group member of “ignoring her elders“. The idol received a lot of hate.
In the original Wavve documentary, Hwasa confessed to suffering from malicious comments and she said:
“Will it end if I die? I can only thank the fans with music, that’s all I can do. But it’s past the point where I don’t like music anymore and I want to leave the industry“

Hwasa was also embroiled in a ‘racism‘ controversy in 2020 after appearing on MBC‘s ‘I Live Alone‘ wearing clothes similar to traditional Nigerian clothing. Viewers abroad shared strong criticisms of her attire and she apologized.
She also drew attention after she was spotted ‘braless‘ while leaving Hong Kong airport in 2019. After her outfit generated controversy, she later said, “I have the freedom and personal right not to wear a bra” which drew the ire of Koreans.
