Avril Lavigne praised Olivia Rodrigo for helping to revive “rock and roll on the charts”. The statement came after the “Bite Me” singer presented the newcomer with the Songwriter of the Year award at Variety Hitmakers Brunch in Los Angeles. In her speech, Avril Lavigne said:
“This year, we were introduced to a new artist whose debut album marked a major rock and roll return to the charts. From ‘driver’s license’ to ‘deja vu’ and ‘good 4u’, the singles from the ‘Sour’ album are part of the collective psyche of 2021, and she has written each of them” said Lavigne.
It is worth remembering that Avril Lavigne released her debut album “Let Go” (2002) shortly before turning 18, the age of Olivia Rodrigo when her first album “Sour” came out, more precisely earlier this year. Upon accepting the award, Olivia Rodrigo added:

“I’ve been writing songs since I was five years old and my favorite part of all of this is that feeling of writing a song that perfectly captures how I feel. It’s better than any conversation I could have.
So accepting a writing award is really meaningful to me”, said Olivia.
Olivia added that she has been living “a dream to see that so many people, from all backgrounds, regardless of gender or sexuality, have sincerely identified with her music“.
This is the second time Avril has praised the young singer.
Earlier this year, she praised Olivia for being “an honest voice” for her young fans. “Her songs are her truth, and you can really feel it. You can tell it’s real by the way all of her fans repeat every word she says” Avril added.
