BTS’ military service may have enlistment exemption

According to the Korean press, the long debate about BTS’ military service could come to an end this week.

This was shared by The Korea Herald and jTBC in relation to the next official session of the defense subcommittee of the National Assembly of South Korea to be held on Thursday, November 25.

Again, the possibility of exempting idols from the mandatory duty of enlisting in the military would be debated.

According to the Asian country’s media, the board could discuss changes to the Military Service Law.

There are projects presented by congressmen so that artists are favored with the exemption from active duty, in reward for having “raised the status of South Korea in the world with their achievements.”

Currently, the norm dictates that all men of Korean nationality between the ages of 18 and 28 must enlist in military service for 18 to 22 months (according to the modality defined by their health evaluation). There are only exceptions in very specific cases.

One of them is awarded on the recommendation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports only to athletes and classical music artists who have achieved international awards. The benefit they get is that they only complete basic training and perform 544 hours of community service over 34 months while working alongside their music or sports careers.
