In a show that started in the stands, then entered the stadium before taking over the entire field. The Weeknd performed a high-octane mix of his hits during the Super Bowl LV halftime show.
While things apparently went smoothly, the 3 Grammy winning artist still garnered a lot of attention on social media.
Twitter users immediately got to work creating memes and comparing various aspects of the set with each other, from the robot-like backup dancers in the stands to the golden room where The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, performed his. hit song “Can’t Feel My Face”, to the bandaged dancers who took over the entire field for the finale.
The singer’s set continued the story of his character from “After Hours.” It began with Tesfaye in a bright red jacket, continuing images inspired by her character from “After Hours” and previous award shows, backed by a large chorus with sparkling eyes. Although it was considered creepy by many, the sequence also resulted in Star Wars’ Jawas and C-3PO memes.
At one point, Abel appeared to enter the stadium, winding through a golden maze of mirrors and performing a dizzying sequence. More memes and comparisons came of course.
Towards the end of “Can’t Feel My Face,” The Weeknd was joined by dancers dressed identically, except for head wraps. When their hit song “Blinding Lights” started playing, the backup dancers created even more material for social media. The Weeknd spent $7 million of his own money, more than the NFL spent.
